Cleaning, Sanitizing, Disinfecting

Cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting are three different processes used to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of germs and infections.

  • Cleaning: refers to the removal of dirt, dust, and debris from surfaces through the use of soap and water or other cleaning agents.

  • Sanitizing: is reducing the number of bacteria and other harmful microorganisms on a surface to a safe level, usually through the use of chemicals or heat.

  • Disinfecting: involves using chemicals or other agents to kill germs and bacteria on a surface. This process is typically used after cleaning and sanitizing to further reduce the risk of infection.

It's important to follow proper procedures and guidelines when performing these tasks to ensure they are effective in preventing the spread of germs and infections.

Here are some general guidelines for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting to prevent the spread of germs and infections:

  1. Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and gowns.

  2. Use the appropriate cleaning products for the type of surface and level of dirt or contamination.

  3. Clean surfaces thoroughly, paying special attention to high-touch areas like door handles and light switches.

  4. Use sanitizers and disinfectants according to the manufacturer's instructions, including dwell time and concentration.

  5. Allow surfaces to air dry after sanitizing or disinfecting.

  6. Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces, such as phones and keyboards.

  7. Properly store and label cleaning and disinfecting products.

  8. Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

  9. Avoid touching your face and mouth to prevent transferring germs from contaminated surfaces.

It's also important to follow local and national guidelines and regulations for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting in various settings, such as hospitals, schools, and public spaces.
